I’m starting a new feature today which may or may not be fun to follow. My thought is that each Monday morning I will do a quick rewind of the Sunday that was at Rock City Church. We’ll see how this goes week-by-week but I know I have lots of material for todays post.
Yesterday was a day of many “firsts” for Rock City. It was the first time since launch that our Pastor was gone on vacation. I was also the first time that we had a record crowd (that didn’t involve NFL and former Buckeye James Laurinaitis speaking). I’m so proud of our entire volunteer team, staff and everyone that pulled together to make it a great day. We stood there stunned as people just kept streaming in to the second service (of three). Long after the music started groups of 4 and 5 people continued to walk through the doors. Amazing.
A few notables:
A huge thank you to Ben Snyder from Cedar Creek Church for “pinch hitting” while our Pastor gets a much deserved rest. This was the second time that Ben has filled in for us and he did a great job. We are blessed to have friends like Cedar Creek.
Our volunteer team made it all happen. Each Sunday large groups of volunteers show up to do everything we need to make Rock City happen. They set up, tear down, usher, serve with children, serve in hospitality and warmly welcome all that attend. Without them, Rock City doesn’t work. I could highlight all groups, but the connecting ushers yesterday had their hands full finding empty seats. Great job team!
I also have to brag on our Rock City staff. I am so honored to work with this team. Throughout the day Saturday we were pulling together some last minute details. Each one contributing to making it happen. Sunday morning the team joined arms and led in all areas. No detail was missed. As the “new guy” on the team, I marveled at their ability to anticipate and execute the many details which needed to be covered. Thank you to all of you for allowing me to learn as you led.
I had the privilege of announcing our support of Samaritan’s Purse to close out all three services. While there are so many great organizations providing relief following Hurricane Sandy, Samaritan’s Purse was the first I thought of. Before the storm even made shore, they were rolling mobile units to the area to be ready. While we cannot explain why these things happen, we can be the hands and feet of Christ in relief efforts. Thank you Samaritan’s Purse! It’s an honor to support you financially and with volunteers.
When I walked in my office this morning, I was handed a list of 13 names that wanted more information about volunteering with Samaritan’s Purse in the areas effected by Sandy. I also had a gentleman approach me after the first service and offered to pull his contractors off of a job, redirect them to assist with Samaritan’s Purse and pay them to do so! I love the hearts of the people that call Rock City Church home. Amazing.
One lighter moment came at the end of the last service. Just as I began to speak, the in-theater bumper (what you hear before movies) kicked on…..LOUD (another Rock City first). “Welcome to AMC Theaters….” It created a moment of levity as I tried to speak over the promotions. The real tension came when it was time to pray. Thankfully our sound team cranked my mic and the promotions cut off just in time. Ah the life of a mobile church. Thankfully it didn’t roll into this….
How was your Sunday?
